Iowa recertification requirements
The most common renewal path is continuing education. Iowa requires a minimum number of core topic continuing education hours (CEHs) based on certification level: 8 hours for EMR/FR, 20 for EMT, 25 for AEMT, and 30 for Paramedic. These hours are distributed across five core topic areas: Airway, Respirations & Ventilations; Cardiology; Trauma; Medical; and Operations. All core CEHs must carry a sponsor number from an authorized Iowa EMS Training Program, Iowa HHS, the Iowa Board of Nursing, the Iowa Board of Medicine, or CAPCE — which means CAPCE-accredited education, like the courses on Prodigy, counts toward your Iowa renewal.
Clinicians who hold a current, valid NREMT certification that extends beyond their Iowa expiration date may renew with their National Registry credential instead of submitting CEHs. Either way, you'll need to complete the online renewal process and pay any applicable fees before your certification expires.
