South Dakota EMS personnel are licensed by the Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners — the Department of Health licenses ambulance services, not individual providers. To renew, you must either hold current NREMT certification or complete the continuing education hours set by ARSD 20:61:03:01: EMR – 8 hours of basic life support study, EMT – 20 hours BLS, AEMT – 40 hours of advanced life support study, and Paramedic – 60 hours ALS (EMT-Intermediate/85 – 40, Intermediate/99 – 60). No specific topic categories are required beyond the basic or advanced life support designation. Renewals open in your MySD account 90 days before your license expires; you submit a signed statement rather than uploading certificates, but you must keep your own CE records in case you are selected for the board's random audit.
